St_Gilles (in the neighbouring Gard)

--- is the original burial place of the Saint who has given his name to many churches, often outside old city boundaries (as in 'Saint Giles Without') because he befriended outcasts such as lepers.  The church or Abbatiale here, though, is in the centre of this small canal-side town and is mainly distinguished by its splendidly carved frontage and the wonderful spaces inside, both in the nave and in the crypt.  We were lucky to be shown round by our friend Philip Baxter who is organist there (pictured at the end of this sequence).
